For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear; I will help.” (Isaiah 41:13)
Do you remember Popeye the Sailor Man? It was a classic cartoon I remember watching as a kid. He was the hero every episode all because of a can of spinach. Brutus, his relentless enemy, regularly threatened poor Olive Oil, the love of Popeye’s life. In every episode, it never failed. Somehow Brutus bullied his way around until Popeye had enough. Popeye would often say, “That’s all I can standz, and I can’t standz no more.” Then, out of nowhere a can of spinach would appear, pop open, work its way down. Suddenly Popeye’s muscles popped and fists went flying. Brutus never stood a chance! Do you need a “Popeye moment?” Our enemy attacks, bullies, and taunts us every day. We keep struggling. Sometimes we just need a moment where we declare—just like Popeye, “That’s all I can stand!” It’s time to change. Today, what are you fighting? Are you overworked, missing what’s most important in life? Are you battling an addiction but keep telling yourself that it’s no big deal? Are you putting off a conversation, hoping the problem will solve itself? Are you making excuses as to why you act a certain way, making jokes about it to help relieve your pain? Then maybe it’s time to stop. Maybe it’s time to make a decision. Enough is enough. It’s time to change. Here’s the best news: Your strength doesn’t come from a can of spinach. Your strength comes from Almighty God. His power is available to you. And his spirit will help you do what you can’t do on your own. -Pastor Michael
